Why are chat invitations necessary

The invitation process lets you control who can chat with you and see you online, and vice-versa -- just in case you have contacts that you'd rather not chat with instantly in Gmail. If you ever decide that you don't want to chat with someone in your Chat list, you can block the contact from chatting with you and seeing you online.
